How Can I Tell My Mom I'm Smart About Sex?

Reviewed by: Steven Dowshen, MD

My mom is always bringing up sex in our conversations. She says she's trying to educate me but it's really embarrassing. I feel like I know everything I need to know and will make good decisions when it comes to having sex. How do I convince her of this?

It's great that your mom wants to communicate with you about sex, but it may make you uncomfortable. Reassure your mom by telling her what you know — and that you feel you will make responsible decisions when it comes to having sex and using condoms to protect yourself.

If you have any questions, your mom can be a great person to turn to. If you're embarrassed to bring up questions, write them down and give them to your mom. And let her know that you will come to her with any future questions or concerns.

It may be awkward and embarrassing to talk to your mom about sex, but she is likely trying to keep your relationship strong and make sure that you have all the information you need.
