I Have Autism. How Do I Make New Friends?

I'm 14 and starting at a new high school. I have autism. How do I make new friends?

You're not alone — all teens wonder how to make friends in a new school. Start by thinking about the things you most like to talk about and do. It's easiest to make friends when you find people who have the same interests. So, where do you meet each other? You can meet in clubs or classes that you enjoy.

Teachers also can help you meet classmates who share your interests. So can an advisor or counselor. Ask them to introduce you to students who might make good friends.

Some schools have social skills groups. These groups help students practice talking, listening, and building other friendship skills. Find out if your school has a group like this. If they do, join it! If not, ask an advisor or counselor to help you build these skills.
